An experimental music venue has closed – and its owner has blamed high business rates.

No more events will go ahead at CrowdPleaser, a young pop-up arts hub that took root in the old 250 capacity Zetland pub on Queensgate in January this year.

Several gigs and club nights took place during its short life at the multi storey venue, which its founder hoped to run by getting music fans to buy tickets in advance to ensure each event was viable.

Events put on there included cult Huddersfield Junglism and Sine Wave djs, Sub:Cult from Leeds and bands such as The Orchid Family.

One of its biggest planned events was a set by Nightmares on Wax DJ Ease in March but this was cancelled.

The Zetland pub had been sitting empty for over one year when Bally Johal, a Sheffield tech start up and vintage shop label owner, took it on.

Its last event took place in April but it had been hoped more would be planned.

When open, he also ran a second hand and vintage shop on its ground floor.

Talking about its closure, Mr Johal said: “Business rates were way to high sadly.

“The valuations office didn’t have any foresight so we ceased trading.

“It’s sad really as they would evidently rather see an empty building.”

Mr Johal said he is now concentrating his efforts back in Sheffield, but may put on another event in Huddersfield in the future.
