“We promise we won’t wait eight more years to release another album,” Embrace frontman Danny McNamara tells the 2,500 fans at the sold-out Leeds O2.

On the evidence of the electric reaction to their long awaited comeback, they’d be wise to get cracking on the next release as soon as this tour is over.

A lively crowd of folk in their 30s and 40s lapped up the Brighouse band’s set like a shoal of hungry piranhas.

The tangible enthusiasm of the crowd carried the band through some early glitches and nerves as they performed a medley of their greatest hits interspersed with the new stuff from last month’s release.

Naturally it was the old-uns that got the crowd jumping and singing along, apparently unperturbed by McNamara’s almost inaudible vocals.

The adulation continued unabashed as the group continued to shine musically but not vocally.

In fact it was younger brother Richard McNamara who impressed with a couple of strong vocal solos on tracks from the latest release.

And with older brother Danny confessing it was Richard who was the driving force behind their return and his favourite tracks on the new album, perhaps Danny needs to up his game.

A quick scan of other reviews on this tour confirms this isn’t a one off and he has been unable to belt out the tunes to the required standard.

For this tour there’s no doubt they can live off the nostalgia, but going forward gig-goers demand pitch perfect singing these days and it looks like that could be a struggle.
