Huddersfield rapper Savvy has joined forces with some famous names from the UK indie scene - Bloc Party and Athlete.

Savvy, who has been kicking around the ‘Brit-hop’ scene for almost a decade, was approached by Athlete frontman Joel Potts to work on some demos.

Now with Bloc Party guitarist Russell Lissack, the trio have recorded track Powerskills, a fusion of jazz-spiced indie hip-hop set to please fans of both genres.

The Fartown rapper was also put in charge of creating a video for the tune, which was filmed in Huddersfield town centre.

“It all started with a random message from Athlete out of the blue on Myspace,” said Savvy.

“They said they’d been a fan of mine for a while and do I wanna work on some stuff.

“That stuff has never seen the light of day but despite that they recommended me to a producer called Camp America who had been on tour with Marina and the Diamonds.

“I went down to Joel’s gold record filled house and recorded it in his home studio in south London, which was cool.

“When I first heard the track I don’t think Russell was on it but by the time I got to London he was, and his parts brought the track together nicely.”

The link-up with the two indie stars is a stark contrast to Savvy’s roots, rapping with friends and then on the Manchester hip-hop scene.

“My interest in music started with an Alba cassette walkman playing my sister’s Donna Summer tape,” he said.

“I seriously got into American hip-hop and thought I’d like to be able to tell a story like that.

“I just started rapping amateur with an American accent and then a mate said do it with your own accent, but I couldn’t.

“It took years and then at New College was the first time I got my hands on equipment.

“They had a sampler and I taught myself how to use it.

“The tutor gave me lunch times and after college to use it, so I made a few tracks and demos.”

Savvy then started performing in public when he moved to go to Manchester City College.

“That’s where it kicked off,” he said.

“I used to go to Night and Day club and grew my confidence.

“A guy called Rodney P was doing a show and he did a shout out, ‘Is there any rappers here?’

“I jumped up and did a verse and he was impressed.

“That made me feel like I was alright and it went from there.”

Under his previous moniker of Asaviour he went on to work with UK rapper Jehst and spent time performing on the London circuit, putting out two albums and two mixtapes during a five year stint living in the capital.

Now a seasoned live performer with his band The Savoir-Faire, Savvy has performed alongside acts like De La Soul and KRs One, Grooverider and Goldie Lookin Chain.

The Powerskills single is available on iTunes.

Savvy’s next gig with his live band The Savoir-Faire is at Leeds’ The Library on Saturday, May 17, with support from Byron Street Social, Ceiling Demons and Terra-ist.

They will also play Kraak in Manchester on May 30th.
