They are well and truly in the swing in Marsden.

The centre of the village became a car free zone over the weekend as the Marsden Jazz Festival took over.

Part of Peel Street was closed yesterday to allow for the festival’s popular street music parade which saw a line up of the usual colourful characters winding their way through the village.

And parts of Waterside and Market Place were also closed to allow for the host of events which began on Friday and continued through the weekend.

Festival chairman John Quail said this year’s festival has been one of the best.

“It’s been quite remarkable,” he said. “The weather’s been kind and tickets have sold really well.

“The parade was excellent and the street was mobbed with people. It’s a village festival but has a growing national reputation for the music and this year has been one of the best.”

Crowds flocked to numerous venues to see the varied line up which included teenage musicians from across Yorkshire who were given the chance to perform on their own stage at this year’s event, with the Bandstand in the Park featuring over 10 hours of live music by youth groups including Kirklees Youth Jazz Orchestra, Heckmondwike Grammar School Soul Band and Greenhead College Swing Band.

Younger children also had the chance to enjoy their own jazz gigs with performances taking place just for them.

Festival organisers also commissioned Leeds College of Music lecturer Lauren Kinsella and Huddersfield-based musician and composer Ben Crosland to perform one-off arrangements.

Today is featuring local school bands and musicians alongside festival headliner saxophonist Jean Toussaint at 3.30pm – but all the tickets are sold out.

The festival was launched on Friday with a ukulele flashmob at Huddersfield Railway Station.
