A young jazz band has been given a chance to shine at Marsden Jazz Festival.

Artephis, made up of five Manchester musicians aged 20 to 21, has been taken under the wing of Jazz North and helped to secure slots at upcoming jazz festivals across the country, including Marsden.

The group has been selected as the Jazz North Introduces Artist for 2015, a prestigious scheme that picks a young jazz group for showcase gigs across the north of England.

The band includes Aaron Wood, 21, trumpet/flugel, James Girling, 20, guitar, Ali Roocroft, 20, piano, Alasdair Simpson, 21, bass and Matt Brown, 20, drums.

They cite their influences as Christian Scott Quintet, Miles Davis Quintet, Wynton Marsalis and Pat Metheny.

Trumpeter Aaron Wood, originally from Holmfirth, has played Marsden Jazz Festival before, with Honley High School and with his father Simon Wood's Hope Bank Jazz Collective.

Jazz North will now help the group play shows at jazz festivals in Southport, Liverpool and Scarborough, as well as their gig at Marsden Jazz Festival (Saturday, 12.30pm, Marsden Mechanics Hall, free).

The initiative will pay expenses for the gigs, has commissioned a photo shoot and will help them to create an electronic press kit.
