IT IS a chance to raise your voice and enjoy singing in the company of others.

Next weekend singers will gather at Wooldale Community Centre for a Sacred Harp session.

It is a style of singing, also known as fasola or shape-note singing, which has its roots in the USA but has grown here.

The annual UK Convention has been held in Marsden for the last two years and those attending have included singers from America.

In addition to all day singings like the one at Wooldale on Saturday March 27, many house sings have sprung up and workshops are a feature in quite a few folk festivals including Holmfirth, Sidmouth and Whitby.

Next Saturday’s event starts at 10.30am running until 4pm.

In previous years it has been held at Choppards but the move to Wooldale offers more parking and space.

Shape Note or Sacred Harp singing is done in a square (tenors face the altos and trebles face the basses) and everyone joins in the singing.

The shapes of the music are designed to help singers learn to read this particular kind of music.

If you are new at this, then follow your neighbour and you’ll start to pick up your part by the second or third verse.

The singing will stop for lunch which is provided by those who take part. Drinks will be provided and a collection will be taken to cover expenses.
