STEVEN Roberts is the new musical director of Honley Male Voice Choir.
Steven, 48, is musical director of Sing Live UK, one of the country’s largest independent adult singing organisations.
He is MD of both the Manchester based Altrincham Choral Society and the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir.
Steven takes the reins at Honley in January and succeeds Peter Lynch who left the choir during the summer.
The Honley choir is delighted to have been able to appoint Steven who is a leading conductor, arranger, vocal coach and adjudicator and will bring a wealth of experience to the job.
“My work as a conductor has enabled me to perform in some of our most prestigious concert halls, but my main priority has always been to continue to try to motivate singers to perform at the highest level as well and having fun and enjoying themselves,” said Steven.
“I am really looking forward to working with Honley and have already arranged some music with them in mind.
“There is a special sound that only comes from male voice choirs and I am looking forward to a long, healthy partnership.”
Choir chairman Roger Wild, said: “The choir has been through an uncertain few years, but Steven’s appointment offers us just the opportunity we need at this time.
“We also hope that by appointing someone of Steven’s calibre the choir will move forward both musically and in attracting new singers to help us build an exciting future for the choir and its members”.
Steven spent 17 years on the staff at Barnsley College and for several years during his time at the college he was Musical Director of both the Dodworth and Skelmanthorpe male voice choirs and also conducted the Allendale Chamber Orchestra.
He has also been Chorus Master for the Liverpool Welsh Choral Union and has worked with Huddersfield Choral Society.
Steven has conducted the Manchester Philharmonic, Derbyshire Sinfonia, the National Festival Orchestra, the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra and the Black Dyke Band.
In addition to voice he has also studied piano and brass and is in great demand as a choral and voice specialist. Since 1993 he has led choral days and workshops inspiring singers throughout the country.
Steven is also an adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals and is on the Board of Trustees and regularly adjudicates throughout the UK. He is also a music mentor for Music for Youth.
