A SHOW described as being ‘like theatre for your ears’ and featuring the Bard of Barnsley, Ian McMillan, comes to Brighouse at the end of the month as part of the town’s arts festival.

The Ian McMillan Orchestra takes poetry, music, songs, comedy and improvisation and spins them into a multi-sensory experience.

Featured at major venues such as London’s Barbican, York Theatre Royal and on The South Bank Show, Loose Ends, The Mike Harding Show and BBC Proms, the six-piece orchestra, headed by vocalist Ian, will be performing at The Central Methodist Church in Brighouse on Friday, August 24.

Poet, comedian and broadcaster Ian hosts a weekly hit radio show, The Verb.

He is poet-in-residence for the English National Opera, The Academy of Urbanism and Barnsley Football Club and a regular on television shows such as Pick of the Week, The Arts Show, The Today Programme and Have I Got News For You.

His orchestra has an unusual line-up of musicians - from mandocellist Dylan Fowler and hurdy-gurdy player Clare Salaman to double bassist Andy Hamill and violinist Oliver Wilson-Dickson.

Composer Luke Carver Goss, who plays the accordion, is the ‘ring-master’.

He also records and performs with his own group, the Carver Trio, and has won wide acclaim for his works.

Ian McMillan and his orchestra are appearing at a series of summer festivals around the country
