MELT the January chill with the fiery flute playing of American musician Jessica Quiñones.

She is in Huddersfield next week to play a recital at St Paul’s Hall with pianist Catherine Shackell.

The concert is on Thursday at 1.15pm (January 27) and is one of a series in the continuing season organised by the music department at the University of Huddersfield.

Jessica is acclaimed for her beautiful tone and detailed musicianship. She has played recitals and given flute classes in America, Scotland, England, Sweden, Japan, Germany and Cyprus. Her career is currently divided between Buenos Aires and Yorkshire, as she is completing a PhD in tango flute performance at the University of Huddersfield.

Yorkshire-based pianist Catherine Shackell is dedicated to bringing innovative quality musical experiences to education and community settings. She is a founding member of the National Award Winning Music Education Group (MEG) and was awarded the Beechams Scholarship for performance before gaining a Masters Degree in Community Music.

Catherine has performed in the UK, Greece, Malta and Canada including playing for the European Piano Teachers Association.

Their programme next week will includes pieces by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, one of the modern masters responsible for the international popularity of the tango.

The two will play further work by Paulina Fain, Argentina’s renowned flautista tanguera whose pieces explore the role of the flute in the tango.

On Tuesday, music students from the university will be at St Paul’s (also 1.15pm) to play new music for koto, viola, clarinet, shakuhachi, oboe and sho.
