TWO choirs from the Holme Valley will unite in a concert of remembrance in Holmfirth.

Holmfirth-based ladies’ choir Vocal Expressions and their guests New Mill Male Voice Choir will sing in a concert at Holmfirth Parish Church on November 12.

Proceeds from the concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will go to the Royal British Legion.

It is five years since the two choirs performed together when Vocal Expressions were guests at New Mill’s 15th anniversary celebratory concert held in Huddersfield Town Hall, so it is an eagerly awaited reunion for choir members and their supporters and fans.

Vocal Expressions was formed 15 years ago with 20 members.

It now has more than 50 singers and its musical director, Michael Howell who was appointed earlier this year, is an accomplished composer and arranger of both choral music and pieces for the organ.

The Remembrance concert programme will include an organ recital by Michael. The choir is accompanied by Emma Binns.

New Mill Male Voice Choir also welcomed a new musical director earlier this year. Alan Brierley began his musical career as a chorister in Huddersfield Parish Church, eventually becoming Head of Music at Moor End High School. The choir’s accompanist is Anne Levitt.

The programme for the evening will include some of Vocal Expressions’ well known pieces plus some newly introduced by Michael, with his arrangement of the Spiritual, Down to the River to Pray fast becoming a favourite with the choir.

The male voice choir will sing a selection of items from their recent concert in Huddersfield Town Hall with classical trumpet star, Alison Balsom.

The two choirs will sing a number of pieces together including Lead Kindly Light from Howard Goodall’s Requiem, Eternal Light. Robert Webb will be the soloist.

Tickets for the Remembrance concert are £7 from Holmfirth Tourist Information office or Maggie Haigh on 01484 689462.
