DON’T be surprised if the roof at the Lawrence Batley Theatre starts lifting this weekend.

Jazz, pop, funk, rock, salsa and punk will all feature in a weekend of music at the theatre which starts tonight.

The main auditorium will be changed to a flat floor to accommodate everything from electric pop punk to salsa dancing.

Jazz Funktion starts the music tonight with the eight piece Haggis Horns belting out hip-hop, afrobeat and soul. These are trained jazz musicians with bags of experience of working with top recording artists so expect that roof to start lifting.

Alongside them will be Extra Curricular, another eight piece band but this time one which mixes jazz and soul and performers including locally based jazz singer Ruby Wood, lyricist and MC, Jack Flash and Zimbabwean, Thabo who brings African influences to his music.

Tomorrow the north’s up and coming bands perform in Noisebox and on Sunday, get out your dancing shoes for what looks set to be a sell-out gig with Latin jazz band Salerosa.

This evening of Latin jazz, salsa and Afro-Cuban beats means that there will be no excuse for not getting out there and dancing.

The night starts with a dance lesson at 7pm for all those who want to get their salsa moves under control before they hit the LBT’s main house ready for Latin grooves with seven piece Afro-Cuban band Salerosa. They have a combination of Latin jazz favourites, original compositions plus chart-topping songs, all underpinned by those Afro-Cuban rhythms. Prepare to dance the night away.

Tickets for all three events from the LBT box office on 01484 430528.
