News of the Ziggy Stardust star's death caught the music world by surprise after an official statement revealed that he'd been battling cancer for the last year and a half.

A message posted to his official social media accounts today, including Twitter , Instagram and Facebook, confirmed the sad news of his death.

It said: “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

The Ziggy Stardust singer was always private and were rumours about his health for years.

Stars from the music world from Madonna to rapper Kanye West have paid tribute.

Sir Paul McCartney described Bowie as someone who "played a very strong part in British musical history".
