ONE man electronic acoustic artist, Dave Perkins, is back in town this weekend.

The Manchester-based singer discovered his love for incorporating unusual sounds with his guitar skills while studying music technology at Huddersfield University.

Now two years after graduating he is back to perform at the Sunday Night Live club at Costa Coffee on New Street.

The 24-year-old is no stranger to Huddersfield’s live scene having gigged around various open-mic nights during his four year tenure at the university.

The alt-pop tunes on his debut EP, David Davies, remind of Radiohead meets The Streets, with Dave overlapping his soothing vocals with quiet guitar chords, looping beats, electronic samples and horns.

Dave said he was led down the path to combining his guitar skills with electronic sounds, after a project in his final year at university.

He said: “We were all taught to appreciate sounds of all kinds – a lot of odd electronic ones using all sorts of things including flamboyant household objects.

“I’m basically a guitarist and a singer but a lot of my writing is electronic.

“It’s done on laptops, keyboards, various gadgets and whatever I can get my hands on that I can record.”

Dave said his music was influenced by a range of acoustic artists which he incorporated with electronic sounds and lyrics about his Christian faith.

And he said he was hoping to write more material and get to more gigs in both Manchester and Huddersfield.

“Faith is as important or more important than music to me,” he said. “A lot of my music tells stories of my faith because it’s who I am. A lot of the songs are my experiences, but there’s no pressure to believe in it, they’re just my stories about what’s happened to me.”

With just a few days to go until the event Dave said he was slightly nervous for his homecoming of sorts.

“It’s usually just me and a guitar,” he said, “but for this gig it will be me, a guitar and a laptop as I’m trying to experiment with ways of performing my music live.”

The free monthly Sunday Night Live gig is this Sunday at Costa Coffee from 7pm (doors 6.30pm).
