THE newly established folk club at the Lawrence Batley Theatre is certainly picking some class acts.

The next event is tomorrow, that’s Saturday May 25.

And the bill offers the distinctive sound of duo Gilmore and Roberts.

For those who like to get dates in their diaries, then pencil in June 22, for that’s the next folk session and with it comes the man described by many as a “musicians’ musician” Wizz Jones.

Quite a billing then and a pair of folk nights which should pack the LBT’s Cellar theatre space.

First up are Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts who have been wowing audiences across the country with their technical expertise and their unassuming style.

Nominated for this year’s Radio 2 Best Duo, they continue to delight folk fans with their lap-tapping guitar, fiery fiddle and their trademark harmonies combined with considerable songwriting talent which has created an original sound.

Last September, they released their third album, The Innocent Left, an album seen by many as their finest yet.

The duo have toured with folk-rock legends Fairport Convention, completed a 30-date nationwide tour in their own right and performed at two of Britain’s largest acoustic music festivals – Cambridge Folk Festival and Fairport’s Cropredy Convention.

Wizz Jones is a remarkable artist who is cited as an early influence for Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ralph McTell.

Learning his guitar licks from the likes of Davey Graham and Long John Baldry, during the early sixties he followed the buskers’ trail from the streets of Paris to the markets of Marrakech.

Returning to the UK, Wizz released his first studio album Wizz Jones in 1969 and released 10 studio albums in the years which followed.

Wizz went on to play with traditional folk band Lazy Farmers, featured on Ralph McTell’s single Easy and in May 2012, Bruce Springsteen opened the sell-out Wrecking Ball concert at the Olympic Stadium with Wizz’s When I Leave Berlin.
