UNSIGNED electro synth duo Destination are on a mission to hit the UK charts. Last week the band beat hundreds of others to finish as the joint winners of the Facebook competition Let’s get a genuine unsigned band into the charts.
The duo, Glynn Jaine from Birchencliffe in Huddersfield and Bridget Gray from Scotland, have already written and recorded one album and their music is for sale on Erasure’s Lexer Music website.
Now they are hoping the 9,000 strong Facebook group will keep their word and download their single this week.
Keyboardist Glynn said he had felt “numb” when he found out they had won.
He said: “It was a bit surreal, obviously you think you would like to win but when it actually happens you’re like, ‘now what?’
“I think we need between 4,000 and 7,000 people to buy it for a chart entry.
“If everyone in the group bought it there’s quite a good chance of us getting a hit.
“It might not happen at all but the potential is there.
“But it’s not just about us; it’s all to support genuine unsigned bands.”
The campaign to get an unsigned band into the chart was launched by music lover Oliver Tooley late last year.
He said: “The growth of this group exceeded my wildest expectations, the quality of the music went beyond even that.
“If we can just finish the job with a Top 40 entry for both bands, I hope to do it again and again.
“What this is not about is trying to take over or to get anything to number one.
“It’s about realising that big business doesn’t have a monopoly on talent.”
Songwriter and vocalist, Bridget, added: “Sites such as Facebook and MySpace have become the mainstay of online musical promotion for thousands of bands, whether long established or newly formed.
“Opportunities such as that presented by Oliver’s Facebook group have the potential to open doors for unsigned artists by generating widespread interest that one group alone may not have the contacts to achieve.
“We feel privileged to be part of this group, and to have the chance alongside the other winner Digital Earth to get our songs out into the public arena in such a unique and exciting way.”
