Leading reggae band Harlem Gem are to perform their first live gig for three years.

The Huddersfield outfit will play at the Love Apple bar in Bradford on April 5 at the Sunday Funday Goes DisOriental event.

Also performing at the gig will be Pakistan-born international electronic music phenomenon DisOrientalist – aka Aejaz Zahid – and Leeds comedy cabaret favourites Madam Laycock and Her Dabeno Pleasures, with their dark, satirical vaudeville and bizarre eclectic music.

There will also be live bellydancing, poetry from Jane Steel, illuminated butterfly art by Crunchy Seafood Snack and DJ sets of dubstep, world fusion and breakbeat from Global Meltdown, the Unknown Zone and Aunt Sally until late.

Headliners Harlem Gem are Richmond Quarshie and Lloyd Charles. They linked up in 1989 and signed with Boss Records, releasing a series of singles, including the unforgettable Missing You, Missing Me, which topped the independent singles charts and won Harlem Gem the Best Newcomers Award.

Their 1994 single Let Me Love You was playlisted nationally on radio, including Radio 1.

Around the same time, Harlem Gem appeared on Teenbeat, Africa’s premier television music programme, alongside Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick and Shabba Ranks.

The potent combination of Richy's musical integrity and Lloydie’s silky smooth voice has become instrumental in defining their distinctive sound.

Harlem Gem are now recording for Huddersfield-based in-house label Gem Magic Records, on which they have released their EP Xtra Play 1, which will form part of an XP series.

It features Junior Lex, who will be a special guest at the Love Apple gig.

Harlem Gem’s aim of setting up a label with a London distribution link is to give Huddersfield artists the chance to break into the music industry in these difficult financial times.

Gem Magic have their own professional recording studio and are looking for artists to join the label.
