PROMOTERS Northern Grit have come up with a novel way to help new students make friends this term.

They are staging a 'befriend a student' gig on Friday at the Student Union venue on the university's Queensgate campus.

Folk rockers Noah And The Whale will perform at the gig, which is only for students and their guests - hence the need to 'befriend a student'.

Noah And The Whale put out their folksy indie track Five Years' Time, featuring Laura Marling, on August 4 and it proved a big hit with radio DJs.

The London group released their debut album Peaceful The World Lays Me Down in August and will arrive in Huddersfield fresh from a tour of the US during September, where they were promoting the release of the album in America.

The gig at Huddersfield University will be their last intimate venue before they head out on a UK tour on October 20.

Supporting Noah And The Whale will be Newcastle band The Little Comets, who are busy making a name for themselves on the northern music scene. Their reputation has been further boosted by recent Radio 1 airtime.

Despite not yet being a household name, they have started merchandising early. They launched their own brand of coffee this April at Newcastle coffee house Artisan Roast, after being spotted by the owner at the city’s rail station.

The Little Comets will be making special impromptu performances around the university campus during the day - so look out, they may end up in one of your lectures!

Tickets, priced £12, are available at the Student Union shop to students, who can also purchase for their guests. There is a limit of four tickets per person and the gig is for over-18s only.
