EMBRACE star Mike Heaton is set to judge unsigned bands in their bid to play at Leeds Festival next week.

The Heckmondwike-born drummer will be joined by Pigeon Detectives frontman Matt Bowman at The Centre Stage finals in Leeds on Tuesday.

The competition, run in aid of Leeds children’s hospice Martin House, is a chance for secondary school bands to battle for a chance to play at the famous Leeds and Reading festivals.

Other judges are Leeds Festival supremo Melvin Benn, Alan Raw of BBC Introducing and singer/songwriter Sarah Garvey.

Top prize is a slot on the BBC Introducing Stage at both festivals along with hundreds of pounds of equipment.

Twelve West Yorkshire-based bands will compete for the prize at the O2 on Cookridge Street on Tuesday, July 19. The night will be hosted by Radio Aire’s Larry and Paul.

Bradford band Talk to Angels, featuring Embrace keyboardist Micky Dale, will close the show. Doors 6pm. Tickets £5/3 concessions. Web:www.o2academyleeds.co.uk
