THERE are bags of Huddersfield connections in a new production in Cleckheaton of what is a musical favourite for many.

Great Horton Theatre Company returns to Cleckheaton Town Hall on Tuesday, June 8, with Jesus Christ Superstar.

A massive hit for Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, it remains popular with theatre companies and music fans and is packed with great songs.

The production at Cleckheaton is packed with talent too and much of it is from Huddersfield.

The Great Horton company continues to rehearse in Bradford, but after the success of its production in Cleckheaton last year it has returned to Kirklees.

Rising costs at the company’s former performance base at the Alhambra in Bradford made a move crucial.

Michael Hellawell, who lives with his family in Longwood, directs and produces the show which runs every evening at 7.30pm with the addition of a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

Michael has gathered together an exciting cast which includes Marsden’s Holly Comber.

Holly, 28, has just finished playing the role of Julie Jordan in the Rodgers and Hammerstein favourite Carousel in the Huddersfield Light Opera Company production at the Lawrence Batley Theatre

In Jesus Christ Superstar she plays Mary.

Alongside her in the cast are other Huddersfield performers including Holly’s boyfriend, Dominic Moccia, who was also in Carousel and Martin Stead who has played with a number of local societies.

Principal roles will be taken by leading amateur actors and singers from West and South Yorkshire.

Suzy Calvert has joined the company as its new choreographer.

She was trained in Huddersfield by Audrey Spencer and is the daughter of former Kirklees Mayor, Clr Jean Calvert.

The show is being staged in association with Christian Aid who will carry out a collection at each performance
