IT’S time for another Sunday concert at the Rex cinema in Elland.

At the organ console this weekend (January 20) is Yorkshire musician Andrew Nix.

Andrew was born in Selby where he still lives.

He began organ lessons at 10 and was soon winning local and national talent competitions.

Just at the stage he was turning professional, in 1985, readers of the Organ Player magazine voted him “Most Promising Young Player.”

The following year he was appointed organist and musical director for Butlins Holiday Worlds.

After four successful seasons with them, Andrew became fully freelance.

Now he is well known as resident organist at the York Museum of Mechanical Music, where he plays the mighty Compton organ, and also for his characteristic light-hearted performances at concert bookings, as the Rex audience can vouch for !

Andrew was in fact the first organist to play before a public audience at the Rex, when he brought his own organ to play at the opening night, back in October 1988.

“Andrew goes back a long way with us,” said proprietor Charles Morris.

“He played for us on our opening night, has been back several times since and has also helped me out with a couple of concerts at the Skipton cinema.”

Admission to the two-hour concert, which starts at 2.30pm, is £4.10 and includes a film novelty and entry in a raffle.

Tea and biscuits will be served in the interval.
