SUMMER spells musical showcase if you are in any way involved with music at the University of Huddersfield.

All next week, students will be sharing some of the music they have been working on all year.

In a series of concerts which begin on Monday (June 10), musicians from each of the university’s ensembles will be in concert mode.

Those involved include its choir and chamber orchestra, its string ensemble and brass band, its symphony orchestra, its big band, its euphonium quartet... the list goes on.

Students will also be showcasing music technology skills in a concert programme which runs from Monday to Friday and surely has something for most tastes.

The music begins on Monday (June 10) at St Paul’s Hall on the university campus (7.30pm) with the university’s Brass Band plus Brass Quintet and the Euphonium Ensemble.

Two concerts follow on Tuesday. The Saxophone Ensemble is in action at St Paul’s Hall at 5.30pm followed at 7.30pm in the Phipps Hall by a music technology showcase.

The New Music Ensemble plays student compositions in both workshop and performance settings, again at the Phipps Hall from 9.15am on June 12.

At lunchtime that day, undergraduate students will be at St Paul’s with music theatre and jazz pieces starting at 1.15pm.

In the evening (7.30pm), also at St Paul’s, there will be one of the week’s concert highlights featuring the University Choir, the Chamber Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra.

The chamber orchestra will play work by Bach and Haydn and the choir will also sing works by Haydn.

The Symphony Orchestra’s programme will feature work by Mendelssohn.

There is a lunchtime concert on Thursday, June 13 at St Paul’s at 12.15pm which will comprise choral music performed by a selection of student vocal ensembles.

For a taste of the university’s much applauded Big Band, return to St Paul’s later the same day (7.30pm) to hear everything from Cole Porter and Sammy Cahn to Mozart.

Friday’s programming has two concerts with which to round off what promises to be a spectacular musical week – if you’ve managed to keep up because this is surely one of the most packed concert weeks of the season.

The lunchtime event at St Paul’s Hall (June 14, 1.15pm) features the Edges Ensemble and at a 5pm concert in the same venue, it will be the musicians of the Trumpet Ensemble stepping into the spotlight.
