THE organist for this month’s concert at the Rex Cinema, Elland, at 2.30pm on Sunday, August 17, is Paul McCulloch, (pictured), from Wallasey.
Like most successful musicians Paul began learning at an early age.
But unusually he went straight to the organ console rather than follow the usual route via the piano.
At the age of nine he became a pupil of Ian Hamilton, the well-known organist of the Paramount and Granada cinema circuits and continued with lessons for many years.
In 1981, aged 16, Paul was awarded the prize for young theatre organist of the year at the 3Js, Gomersal.
He has since played at the Bluecoat School, Oldham, the Odeon, Leicester Square, and many other venues.
Having previously slotted in the organ playing between his job as a joiner and builder Paul has since turned professional.
He has had several engagements in hotels and restaurants and a season at the Norbreck Hotel, Blackpool.
