PROPERTY developer Jonathon Mallinder is shot dead in a professional hit in his Portsmouth apartment.

Detective Inspector Joe Faraday of Major Crimes heads the investigation in the eighth novel in the series.

The author does not go in for action, but has built his success on meticulous police procedure that rings true at every page. Faraday takes the reader with him on the case.

Of course, this isn’t a straightforward murder. A government defence minister is also gunned down in the city and Faraday’s long-time sidekick, Detective Constable Paul Winter, has gone undercover after apparently being sacked from the force after a drink driving charge and is working for local crime boss Bazza McKenzie.

Faraday uncovers layers of deceit and confusion to solve two murders and Winter begins to wonder which side of the law is best. Excellent, true to life detective yarn.
