THEY’VE long provided a taste of Zulu culture with concerts and community events plus workshops in schools.

Now the Zulu dancers and musicians from the kingdom of KwaZulu Natal who form the company, The Mighty Zulu Nation Theatre Company are working more closely with a new partner, InterComm, Integrated Resources for Community Development Ltd which is based in Huddersfield.

The eight performers from the Mighty Zulu Nation, have toured schools and theatres both in Britain and abroad for a number of years.

They are all based in West Yorkshire and have been touring this country delivering cultural diversity awareness programmes in schools.

The dancers and musicians use their skills to introduce youngsters to music, drama and song and to share their cultural experiences.

They have already had a busy summer, working with youngsters in schools before the holidays and appearing at the new event, A World Together which was held in Greenhead Park last month. This new venture, which replaced the Mela which had been held in previous years, featured music, dance and crafts from around the world and was a real family event.

It fitted perfectly the ethos of the Mighty Zulu Nation who want to share their own culture but also to use it to engage with young people and build with them a sense of community.

“We hope that by working with children we will be able to help keep them away from guns and violence and from the use of drugs and alcohol,” said a company spokesman.

The power of their music delights young and old alike and the company is keen to work with young people and to encourage local talent.

Whilst its touring work continues, the company is also involved in setting up workshops in Huddersfield at the Hudawi Centre and at the community centre in Lockwood.

The workshops should be starting this month and the company can be contacted through Intercomm at Ray Street Enterprise Centre on 01484 543545 or the Hudawi Centre in Huddersfield.
