AN AWARD-winning male voice choir teamed with one of the area’s leading bands.

That’s the combination on offer at Upper Denby next Friday.

Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir and Skelmanthorpe Band are holding a joint concert in the church of St John the Evangelist Church.

The venue is not far from the band’s home base or from Shelley College where its B Band is in action on the same night in a concert with jazz star Dennis Rollins.

But the main band, which plays in the Championship Section, will be centre stage in a Mid-Summer Night Concert as they have billed the joint event with Bolsterstone.

As for the choir, its singers won many friends in Huddersfield last November when it performed alongside top jazz musician John Surman at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

It was a remarkable event combining the talents of 60 or so singers and those of internationally renowned composer and multi-instrumentalist Surman.

The choir spent six months rehearsing this new commission, called simply Lifelines, before giving back to back performances.

First came that hcmf date at Huddersfield Town Hall with a repeat the following day at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank as part of the London Jazz festival.

That London performance was later broadcast on BBC Radio3.

The choir will sing in the Isle of Man choir festival in October and is preparing to celebrate its 80th Anniversary.

Tickets for the June 21, Upper Denby concert, which starts at 7.30pm, from The Village Store, Ingbirchworth, The George Inn, Upper Denby, or phone Graham on 07776 360137.
