STORYTELLER, songwriter and musician Simon Heywood (pictured) will be sharing his talents in a traditional songwriting workshop in Holmfirth in July.

Simon lectures on creative writing at Derby University and has been telling stories for fascinated audiences since the early Nineties.

He has written music for a number of storytelling projects including The Twisting Field and The Middle Yard, based on Irish mythology. His songs and music have been widely performed and recorded.

Simon will be in Holmfirth to run a one-day workshop. There will be a chance to hear and discuss Simon’s work, to explore the basic elements and skills involved in song-writing and to take a fresh look at approaches to traditional songs and songwriting.

It is also a great chance for people to work on their own existing ideas and to go home with some new ones – or even a new song.

If you are interested in songwriting and have some previous experience, this workshop could be just right for you. Simon encourages people to take along their own material, to try it out and to share it with the group. And if you want to take along a musical instrument that’s fine too.

The workshop is in Holmfirth Library on July 12 from 10.30am to 4pm.

Tickets are £5 per person and include light refreshments. Places are limited so you are advised to book on 01484 222430 or email holmfirth.library@kirklees.gov.uk
