IT IS a Christmas cracker of a recording and could well see Huddersfield Choral Society back in the CD selling spotlight.

Choral Society members and a top team of music professionals spent 15 hours over a January weekend this year recording 26 carols for a new CD.

That recording, called simply The Carols Album, is out now and if previous Choral Society recordings are anything to go by could be a real Christmas winner.

We’ve teamed up with the Choral Society to offer six lucky readers a chance to win a copy of this new CD, which is on sale on the Signum Records Label.

Joseph Cullen, the society’s chorus master, conducted the choir on the recording, which was made in Huddersfield Town Hall, and international organist Darius Battiwalla, who is also the society’s deputy chorus master, played the Father Willis organ.

Most of the arrangements are by Joseph or Darius and several members of the Orchestra of Opera North brass section added their skills to the recording.

The CD offers a range of carols from old favourites such as O Come All Ye Faithful and Silent Night to a new setting by Darius of Little Jesus, Sweetly Sleep.

The inclusion of Christians Awake, traditionally sung by the Choral before each performance of Messiah at Christmas, will delight many.

Society president John Denham said: I’m delighted the Choral Society has again made a carols recording. The previous hymns and carols album, made over 20 years ago with Orwain Arwel Hughes, sold over 100,000 copies worldwide.’’

To win one of the six copies that we have to give away tell us the name of the carol that is traditionally sung before each Choral performance of Messiah at Christmas.
