NINETY years of the Huddersfield Thespians will be celebrated in style – with a production of Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party.

The Thespians are about to embark on their 90th year, having formed on June 9 1920 at a meeting held in Broadbent’s canteen.

There it was proposed that a play producing society be formed and at a General Meeting on June 23 1920 it was agreed that the society would be known as the Huddersfield Thespians.

Success quickly came with the Thespians first production – a one-act adaptation of Moliere’s The Mock Doctor performed in Greenhead Park on July 24, 1920 to an audience of around 1800.

A performance of Don at the Temperance Hall, watched by more than 400 people, followed on October 13, 1920.

The Thespians official 90th season will begin after their May AGM.

But they’re already starting the celebrations with their production next week.

It runs at The Cellar at the LBT from Tuesday, March 2, until Saturday, March 6, at 7.45pm each night, with a matinee performance at 2pm on the Saturday.

Tickets are £8 with concessions available. Call the Box Office on 01484 430528 for tickets.
