An exhibition of new and critically acclaimed work by husband and wife team Lucy and Jorge Orta opens at Yorkshire Sculpture Park tomorrow (July 20).

The exhibition, which is both in the open air and at YSP’s Longside Gallery, runs until November,

It revolves around the theme of water, which is central to the Ortas’ work.

Two new pieces will be launched at the exhibition, The Raft of Medusa and Spirits of the Huveaune – Ubelka, a life-size bronze for the open air.

Helen Pheby, Senior Curator at Yorkshire Sculpture Park said: “We're delighted that the Ortas have chosen YSP to premiere their new sculptures and share first sight of them with our visitors.

“It was very exciting to see the elements of The Raft of Medusa being unwrapped, including oars, life belts and wonderful sea creatures.

“The artists use an impressive range of materials to make sculptures, survival outfits and performances that help us to think about our impact on the world around us, and each other.

“The exhibition has the theme of water in its many manifestations, such as life giver or destroyer, and includes works made by the Ortas after their visit to Amazonia.

“I'm especially fond of the dolphin as part of The Raft of Medusa, as of course many people will be, but in the context of this exhibition it’s a reminder and a call to action about the damage being inflicted on the natural world”.

Before meeting in Paris in the 1990s, Lucy studied fashion knitwear design in England while Jorge studied fine art and architecture in Argentina.

Together they explore key 21st century themes including biodiversity, environmental sustainability and climate change, creating work with the power to inspire awareness and action.

They use a wide range of media including textiles, bronze, found objects, ceramics and performance.

For those who have visited London recently, the giant 15 metres cloud installation unveiled at St Pancras Station is by the Ortas.

That work, Cloud: Metoros has been placed above the station’s Grand Terrace and is the first artwork in a series of “Terrace Wires" pieces commissioned by HS1 Ltd for the space - which was home to the Olympic rings last summer.

The YSP exhibition runs until November 3.
