Future Olympians can start scaling the dizzy heights with a free event in Huddersfield this weekend.

The second free training day at Milnsbridge Climbing Boulder is taking place on Saturday.

And it couldn’t be more timely with bouldering set to become an Olympic sport for the first at Tokyo in 2020.

After the success of last year’s debut event, Huddersfield volunteers Milnsbridge Enhancement Group is again teaming up with Huddersfield Climbing Centre to offer a day’s free training.

Running from noon to 4pm, the day will be split into two sessions - the first open to all and the second more tailored instruction for small groups and individuals.

Users will be trained in boosting climbing technique; how to get the best out of it; how to use it for training and how climbers should use the activity safely.

MEG secretary Alex Thompson said: “Bouldering is a form of low-level climbing where the emphasis is on agility and balance rather than height. It doesn’t require ropes or special equipment, making it accessible for all ages and abilities.

“The sport has increased in popularity in recent years with indoor climbing walls opening up all over the country. It is already part of the school sports curriculum and now has the Olympics in its sights.”

The only one of its kind in Kirklees, the Milnsbridge Climbing Boulder is available for all to use for free at the Crow Lane recreation ground.

Huddersfield Climbing Centre is based in the town’s leisure centre and staffed full-time by experienced climbers offering coaching and instruction. It is open from 10am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 6pm at weekends.

Milnsbridge Enhancement Group are volunteers dedicated to carrying out projects aimed at making the area a better place in which to live and to visit. The climbing boulder opened in 2014.

Huddersfield Climbing Centre is part of the Climbing Centre group which operates walls in Manchester, Harrogate and Reading.

Places are limited for the more tailored sessions on the training day so booking is essential. Details at: milnsbridgeenhancementgroup@gmail.com
