Mirfield is gearing up a right royal celebration this evening to celebrate The Queen's 90th birthday.

A beacon bonfire will be it to honour Her Majesty at Crossley Farm in Crossley Lane, organised by Mirfield Town Council.

As well as the bonfire, there will be live music, fairground rides, food and drink stalls and entertainment, as well as celebratory fireworks.

The festivities will begin at 6pm and the beacon bonfire is the only event in Kirklees marking the Queen's big day.

The Mirfield event is part of the official Queen’s 90th Birthday Beacons, run by pageant master Bruno Peek.

Beacons can either be traditional bonfires or gas-fuelled braziers. Mirfield has gone for the real thing and has enlisted the expertise of Mirfield Round Table volunteers who run a charity bonfire on Mirfield Showground every year.

The bonfire will be lit by the Mirfield branch of the Royal British Legion at 7pm and the firework display will follow at 8pm.

Crossley Farm can be accessed from Sunnybank Road, Shillbank Lane or Wellhouse Lane.

Organiser Clr Martyn Bolt said: “This is one of the highest vantage points in Mirfield with views across to Holme Moss , Emley Moor and, looking east, almost as far as Goole docks."
