We may complain about Huddersfield weather — and we get more than our fair share of rain and grey skies — but every now and again, we get to enjoy a heatwave and some proper summer weather.

Huddersfield's scenery looks even prettier under clear blue skies, and it won't be long before you see people who have dug out their shorts and headed out into the sun.

But if it gets too hot, where can you go to cool off?

We've had a look at where you can enjoy some paddling, find a refreshing breeze or some soothing shade.

Here’s our top seven spots to cool down around Huddersfield:

Greenhead Park padding pool

Always popular with children of all ages, it’s a perfect spot to splash around.

Remember the sun hat, sun lotion and drinks. There’s usually an ice cream van nearby, or go to the little kiosk for an ice cold lolly.

Eastergate bridge, Marsden

Just upstream from this packhorse bridge there’s a lovely little spot for paddling. Dip your toes in the chilly water and enjoy a picnic beneath a parasol. Take a coolbox full of drinks and snacks. The stream is rarely more than a trickle.

Castle Hill

Victoria Tower, Castle Hill

The hill itself sits about 900ft above sea level, so it should be a little cooler in a gentle breeze.

If not, pop into the tower itself, buy a ticket and enjoy the cool, damp air. Victoria Tower is open every day from July 23 to September 10.

The tower itself should provide a bit of shade once outside.

Standedge Tunnel, Marsden

Narrowboat at Tunnel End, Marsden - Michael Scaramuzza

Take a trip through time on a canal boat ride under the Pennines.

There are 30-minute boat trips and through trips which take two hours.

There are two scheduled trips every other Saturday, one leaving Marsden at 10am and the other leaving Diggle at 1pm.

The tunnel remains a cool temperature all year round, so you might need a cardie!

Trips are not suitable for under 5s. To book call 01484 844298.

One of the few open air swimming pools still left in these parts.

A great day out for the family, although it is a bit of a drive from Huddersfield. For opening times check at www.ilkleylido.co.uk

Your own back garden

If you have a garden, buy a paddling pool for around £20 and half fill it with cold water.

Let the kids run riot with water balloons and water pistols. Get the deck chairs out and pretend you’re in Spain.

Brid, Filey, Blackpool or Southport?

Filey Beach, Filey

Get up early, head to the coast. Let the kids splash around in the always-chilly seawater.

Pop into the amusement arcades if it gets too hot or find an ice cream parlour!
