TOP broadcaster Sir David Attenborough and star ballerina Darcey Bussell were among the big names at a BBC Prom marking the 70th anniversary of Desert Island Discs this week.

And there to help provide some of the spectacular musical choices by other former castaways at a concert hosted by Kirsty Young, the Radio 4 show's current presenter were singers from Huddersfield Choral Society.

The anniversary celebration was recorded as part of this year’s BBC Proms series at the Royal Albert Hall in London and broadcast on Radio 3.

The Choral singers were supported by society members including its president Mrs Jenny Lockwood. They were delighted when Sir David got to his feet to mark the tradition of the audience standing for the singing of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah which was one of the pieces chosen for inclusion in the programme.

The performers included Irish soprano Ailish Tynan, singer Anna-Jane Casey, heard in a previous BBC Prom celebrating The Broadway Sound, conductor Keith Lockhart, baritone Simon Butteriss and Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel who took the place of Sir Willard White who was unable to appear.
