IT IS a company that has a reputation for doing innovative shows so there’s no surprise that the group has decided to change its name to match that go-ahead reputation.

Formed in 1920 as Christ Church Woodhouse Amateur Operatic Society, the society has decided to take a new name.

It will now be known as Woodhouse Musical Theatre Company which it feels better reflects the kind of work the company is doing.

“Woodhouse has always had an enviable reputation for being innovative and forward looking as they both attempt to attract not only regular theatregoers but also to reach out to new and younger people both as performers and in the audience said society chairman, Alan Warmby.

“In recent years, the company has produced such shows as Chicago, Footloose, The Buddy Holly Story, Little Shop of Horrors, Witches of Eastwick, Return To The Forbidden Planet, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and this year’s was Chorus Line.

“Most of these shows have been either Kirklees or Huddersfield senior premieres. None of these shows are remotely operatic.

“Had we been called Woodhouse Stamp Collecting Club or Woodhouse Train Spotting Society, then everyone would know what we did. But the name Woodhouse Operatic Society no longer reflects what we do which is modern, musical theatre.

“Like all societies, Woodhouse is always looking to attract new, young members.

“If you were a 17 or 18 year old looking to get to get involved, would you go anywhere near a group that has ‘operatic’ in its title?”

In response to its new name, Woodhouse has a new logo designed by one of its young members, Luke Flack.

It is also getting ready to audition for its next show, Happy Days which is based on the hit TV series of the same and featuring The Fonz.

The show is currently on professional tour in the USA and has only just been release for performance by amateur companies. Woodhouse has moved fast to secure the rights.

This rock and roll style musical will hit the Lawrence Batley Theatre stage next spring. David Lockwood will direct with Cathy Peters as choreographer and Chris Lucas coming in as the company’s new musical director.

Auditions are on September 24 but anyone interested can pick up a script at Paddock Cricket Club on September 10 at 7.30pm.
