The sound of brass filled Brighouse today.

A total of 26 brass bands from across Britain and from the United States were in town for a big competition.

They were taking part in the 16th Brighouse Lions March and Hymn Tune contest, which began in the Town Hall Square.

The reigning champions Marsden Silver Band were again there to defend their crown but they faced competition from across the country and from the Lake Wobegone Band, who had flown in thousands of miles from Minnesota in the States.

The bands were competing for various trophies which were on offer in various categories including best euphonium, best soloist and top band.

The festival also included a Saturday concert at the Central Methodist church featuring Elland Youth Band and the visitors from America, and a beer and brass evening at The Beck in Bradford Road.
