A passionate Huddersfield mother who put aside her own grief to campaign tirelessly for the safety of others has been shortlisted for the renowned Tesco Mum of the Year Awards.

Caring Deighton mum and founder of the Dominic Rodgers Trust, Stacey Rodgers, beat thousands of nominations to become one of 26 inspirational women from across the UK who are now in with a chance of winning thanks to their dedicated campaigning, education raising and fundraising work.

Stacey was only 27 when her 10-year-old son Dominic died from carbon monoxide poisoning when fumes seeped into his bedroom while he was asleep in 2004 and since then has not stopped raising awareness of the dangers of the gas in confined areas.

Creating the trust to make as many people possible aware of the silent killer, she also co-founded the Kirklees Carbon Monoxide Awareness Group (KCOAG), which focuses on teaching school children about the dangers of the gas through interactive science workshops, assemblies and film.

And in 2010, Stacey took her campaign to Westminster when she launched an awareness group at a parliamentary breakfast with two other women, called CO Angels and encouraged the nation to join their pledge to get 10 million carbon monoxide alarms in to homes across the UK by 2020.

More recently, Stacey spearheaded a campaign to highlight the dangers of carbon monoxide in confined spaces including tents at campsites called ‘Keep safe and carry on camping – Carbon Monoxide kills.

Stacey said: “I think the message is getting through out there.

“My campaign is timely as there have been several deaths from barbecue-related incidents so it is really important that we make people aware of the dangers.

“My ultimate dream would be for every house to have carbon monoxide detectors in much the same way that smoke alarms are installed as a matter of course, nowadays.”

To mark the 10th anniversary of the awards, Tesco will donate £1,000 to a charity of each shortlisted mum’s choice, which Stacey has asked to be given to the trust.

Commenting on the contribution, Stacey said: “The donation will be put towards awareness projects, including talking to students, establishing our website and pioneering an international carbon monoxide safety event.”

She and the other contenders will be judged by a panel which includes DJ Sara Cox, TV personality Gabby Logan and sports presenter Denise Lewis and the winners will be announced next March at The Savoy.

Tesco Mum of the Year Manager, Debbie Chernin, said: “We have read many incredible stories and it’s a privilege to celebrate such inspirational women.

“Our aim is to show every single mum just how wonderful she is.”
