"We may never know the reasons why he carried out this brutal attack but we welcome this guilty plea for Emma," said the man responsible for bringing Jonthan Sutton to justice.

Sutton today pleaded guilty to the murder of Emma Mansell and the grievous bodily harm of two children on that night in May that shocked the whole town of Huddersfield.

However Sutton, a former West Yorkshire Police officer, has never fully explained his reasons for flipping and killing his partner, 37, with who he shared a house with in Reinwood Road, Oakes.

Sutton was today handed three life sentences for his crimes. He was told he must serve a minimum of 28 years for the murder of his girlfriend.

Leeds Crown Court heard horrific details of the attack on Miss Mansell, who suffered 81 separate injuries.

The former teaching assistant at a Huddersfield school for children with special needs was hit in the face with a glass before being stabbed repeatedly.

It was also revealed that she was pregnant at the time of the attack.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Adrian Taylor said: "At 9:30pm on the night of May 18 this year we were called to a property in Huddersfield to reports of an ongoing domestic incident.

"What we found there was much worse - a 37-year-old woman had been killed and two children had suffered serious stab wounds. 

"Following a short investigation, Jonathan Sutton was arrested and charged with the murder of Emma Siswick and the grievous bodily harm of the two children. 
"We may never know the reasons why he carried out this brutal attack but we welcome this guilty plea for Emma and the two young children he seriously assaulted.

"We hope that her family can now start to rebuild their lives and move on from this horrific incident."

In addition a spokesperson for Emma's family, said: "Emma's family would also like to thank all her family and friends for their unwavering support throughout this devastating time."
