Hundreds of eager shoppers queued round the car park of Slaithwaite's new Aldi store.

The store, which opened at 8am this morning, attracted hundreds of shoppers with the promise of a special 'golden ticket' for the first 100 customers with the chance to win vouchers and other prizes.

The store has created 40 new jobs and is based on the site of the former Colne Mills in Britannia Road.

Plans for a new store split the village with much opposition to it from people who claimed business would be lost from independent shops.

Some locals welcome the competition and choice, and planning permission was eventually granted by Kirklees Council.

The new store has taken nine months to build and has 90 car parking spaces.

The store will stock 1,500 lines.

Store manager Simon Dean said: “Aldi would like to thank everyone for their patience and support over the last nine months and hope that customers enjoy their new Aldi store.

The store’s opening times are 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
