Kirklees Council has said it does not know how much money was wasted on a children’s maze project that was scrapped.

The scheme in Greenhead Park was begun in May but then suddenly halted in late August when it was partially built.

The council has admitted it shelved the plan after deeming both the breeze block materials used, and location of the maze within the park, as unsuitable.

Some work has continued but the council has now revealed a new design is underway.

The “playability” of the site will go to consultation with the public and councillors.

Answering an Examiner information request, the council said it had no costings for the failed maze scheme and no signed off plans.

It says a decision that the maze was unsuitable for small children was made on September 2.

But it confirmed the design had been sanctioned by the head of parks and that the Friends of Greenhead Park group was consulted.

Kirklees officers have had to change the scheme but the council said the cost of the extra work was not yet “quantifiable”.
