Police warn of PC pop-up scam
West Yorkshire Police are warning of tech-scammers who are targeting people via pop-ups and cold calls.
These scammers are fraudsters who claim to offer a legitimate technical support service by offering to ‘fix’ non-existent computer issues and viruses. Police have revealed one person in the area has been conned out of hundreds of pounds after a pop-up appeared on their computer screen claiming something was wrong and telling them to call a helpline.
The pop up window wouldn’t close when the victim tried to shut it down so the victim rang the contact number. The fraudsters then convinced the victim didn’t have sufficient antivirus protection and persuaded the victim to grant them remote access to their PC.
The fraudsters then installed a Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - a free tool - and took £320 as payment. Anyone who experiences attempts at this type of scam is advised to inform police.

Fire fighters attend barn blaze in Robertown
Fire services attended a barn fire in Robertown in the early hours of this morning.
Crews from Cleckheaton and Dewsbury were called to the scene on Church Road shortly before 4am after a neighbour heard the sound of the asbestos roof burning and popping and alerted his neighbours.
The residents managed to start dousing it in water before the fire service turned up and used hoses to extinguish the fire. Timber inside the barn - which luckily was only used for storage with no animals inside - was well alight and damage was caused to the roof of the building. Thankfully none of the flames spread to the adjacent house.
No-one was injured in the fire.
