Police have confirmed a man died after falling from Scammonden Bridge this morning.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police has said: "Police were called to the Rainbow Bridge near Scammonden Dam at junction 23 at about 6.51am to a report of a man in distress on the bridge above the M62.

"Officers attended and closures were put in place but at about 7.13am, the man fell into the carriageway, sustaining fatal injuries.

"West Yorkshire Police thanks drivers for their patience and asks them to find alternative routes if possible."

A full closure of the M62 was needed while officers manage the incident and carry out investigation work.

The eastbound side has since re-opened by 9.30am and the westbound carriageway was re-opened at 11am.

The M62 has re-opened now, but there remains slow traffic on local roads as follows:

1) Traffic heavier than normal and queueing traffic on A58 Halifax Road Southbound before B6113 Elland Road / Back Lane.

Likely to be traffic avoiding the M62 problems.

2) Traffic heavier than normal and queueing traffic on A640 Huddersfield Road Westbound before A640 Rochdale Road / A672 Ripponden Road / A6052 Delph Road / A672 Oldham Road (Denshaw Crossroads).

Due to the M62 problems.

3) Pike End Road in both directions closed due to accident, car and motorbike involved at A672 Oldham Road. Traffic is coping well.

M62 now re-open

The M62 eastbound has been fully re-opened.

The westbound section re-opened at 11am following the tragic incident when a man fell to his death.

Congestion is expected Westbound between J24 A629 (Ainley Top) and J22 A672 (Rishworth Moor), congestion to J25 A644 (Brighouse).

Scammonden Bridge in both directions has re-opened following the earlier closure between the A640 New Hey Road and Withens Lane.

A man has tragically died after an incident on the M62 today.

At about 7.13am, the man fell into the carriageway, sustaining fatal injuries.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “Drivers are now being urged to avoid the M62 near Scammonden, Huddersfield following a fatal incident there earlier this morning.

“Police were called to the Rainbow Bridge near Scammonden Dam at junction 23 at about 6.51am to a report of a man in distress on the bridge above the M62.

The M62 is partially closed due to a police incident on Scammonden Bridge.

Just after 7am all traffic was halted between Junction 22 at Rishworth and Junction 23 at Huddersfield while “Police resolve an incident on an over bridge”.

The incident is on Scammonden Bridge.

It was reported just after 7am and Police closed both sides of the M62 at 8am. West Yorkshire Police’s Road Policing Unit is at the scene dealing with the incident.

There is already queueing traffic and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

At 9.20am Highways Yorkshire said they are beginning to release traffic.

They’re starting from the rear of the westbound section - they are turning traffic around and taking it back to Outlane.

Delays on local roads

The incident on the M62 is causing problems on local roads.

New Hey Road, at Outlane, is busy towards Manchester.

There is also slow traffic and traffic heavier than normal on the A672 Oldham Road Northbound between Moselden Lane (Rishworth) and A58 Rochdale Road (Ripponden).

All routes towards Manchester will be busier than usual so expect delays.

The M62 remains closed in both directions due to a person on Scammonden Bridge who police have concerns about.

There is stationary traffic due to police incident.

No traffic is moving between J22 A672 (Rishworth Moor) and J24 A629 (Ainley Top).

The incident was reported to police just after 7am and police closed the motorway at 8am.
