Parents have been ordered to pay more than £2,000 after taking their children out of Kirklees school for holidays.

Kirklees Magistrates dealt with several cases involving unauthorised absences of children during term time.

And all of the families were ordered to stump up large fines and prosecution costs.

They had been taken to court after failing to pay penalty fines imposed by the council.

It was recently revealed that almost 1,000 parents were given “fines” by schools last year for taking holidays in termtime.

None of the parents were present for the hearings yesterday.

However magistrates sitting in Huddersfield found all of the matters proved.

They included a Mirfield mum who took her 15-year-old boy out of school for a week.

Magistrates heard that she had informed the school about a trip to a project in Spain.

The mum claimed that the experience would be valuable to her son’s education but her request was rejected.

She was fined a total of £458 in fines and court costs.

A Thornhill couple were told to pay £294 each after taking their seven-year-old out of school for a trip.

A Batley woman pulled three of her children aged between eight and 16 out of their classrooms for almost a month.

The youngsters were absent from the schools between November 28 and December 21 last year.

Magistrates ordered her to pay £665 after she claimed to the school that she wanted to take her children to Pakistan to visit their sick grandmother.

A 25-year-old mum from Dewsbury took her child out of school for five days and must pay £428.

And a Longwood mum was charged £571 after taking her two children on holiday despite a letter from the school declining her request.

All of the parents have 14 days to pay the money to the court.
