Graffiti vandals have damaged a piece of Huddersfield history.

Lots of slogans and names have been daubed on pillars and walls on the Cloth Hall, which sits in Ravensknowle Park, off Wakefield Road.

One angry visitor to the park said: “It’s such a shame that people have to spoil our monuments with graffiti and abuse.

“It’s shows sheer disrespect and disregard, and it is disappointing that people feel the need to do this”.

The remaining parts of the hall date back more than 250 years.

Huddersfield’s textile manufacturers got together in 1765 to commission a Cloth Hall in the town centre, creating a meeting place where they could do business.

Take a look at the vandalism below.

The huge structure, which included the clock tower, was the work of Sir John Ramsden and further developed by his son.

At one point there was enough space in the hall for 600 textile bosses to conduct their business, travelling from many parts of the country.

What can we do about mindless vandalism like this? Have your say in the comments below.

Kirklees Council is now responsible for the upkeep of the memorial in the park and are investigating the graffiti.
