Tributes were paid last night to a man killed in an horrific accident in Huddersfield.

Friends of the 58-year-old victim, named locally as Alistair Duncan, described him as “a lovely, lovely man” as news filtered through about his death.

He died in hospital shortly after he was struck by a car.

The tragedy happened at 10.30pm on Thursday night on Wakefield Road, Dalton when Mr Duncan was fatally injured by a BMW M3 convertible.

The victim, who lived with his elderly mother in Dalton was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary by ambulance but sadly died of his injuries a short time later.

Police believe a second BMW may also have been involved and subsequently two men were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

No-one else was injured.

Police cordoned off the scene near The Stag pub following the collision to allow emergency services to deal with the scene.

Barbara Shires, who recently retired as landlady of the popular pub, said: “He was one of my favourite regulars, a lovely, lovely man.

“He used to call in most days for a pint or two, sometimes Tetleys bitter, sometimes lager, depending on his mood.

“He was very well-known to all the customers and I have spoken to a few of them who are shocked.

“He came across as very quiet but that’s because he had a bit of a speech impediment. He loved to call into the pub and was always smiling.

“He had been doing some work with a gardening team for Kirklees Council.

“It’s just so sad, as he lived with his mother and she is in hospital herself. He had also been mugged a couple of times as he came across as vulnerable.”

Accident investigators were called to help with the inquiry

Pc Andy McManus, from West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “The incident occurred around 10.28pm close to the Stag public house when the pedestrian, who is a local man, was struck by a blue coloured BMW M3 convertible vehicle.

“He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary but sadly died of his injuries a short time later.

“The 22-year-old driver of the BMW M3 was arrested from the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.

“A 37-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

“This followed reports a black coloured BMW 5 series vehicle he was driving, could also have been involved in the collision.”

Any witnesses or anyone seeing the vehicles in the moments before the collision are asked to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team via: 101 and quote reference number 1856 of May 15.
