A youth has been caught on camera swiping two ornamental gorillas from a garden.

Ian and Helen Hartley set up the CCTV system to protect the garden at their home on Shelley Avenue in Heckmondwike .

And the cameras recorded the thief taking the two gorillas at 1.30am on Tuesday, January 19.

Now Ian, who services metal cutting machinery, wants people to see the footage in the hope it will lead to an arrest.

The 64-year-old said: “We’ve always liked gorillas and had them specially made for us out of concrete 20 years ago. There are no others like them and we’ll not be able to replace them. Helen is really upset at what’s happened. The youth on the CCTV has a very distinctive coat so perhaps that’s a clue as to who he is.

“He came into the garden from the side to get the statues and it was all over in a few seconds.”

The suspect is white, aged 17 or 18 and the coat is light with a black trim on the pocket and side vents.
