Work has been suspended on a major Huddersfield road after a water main kept bursting.

Essential resurfacing work at Thornhill Road, Marsh, has been under way for several weeks now but that has been halted.

Katherine Hunt, principal engineer at Kirklees Council, told Lindley ward councillor Cahal Burke:

“At present work has been suspended at Thornhill Road as we are now waiting for Yorkshire Water to carry out a detailed investigation into the condition of their water main.

“We have completed the surfacing to binder course level but see little point in finishing off the surface course if their investigation determines that the main needs to be replaced.

“I have asked Yorkshire Water for a timescale for the investigation but haven’t heard anything back yet.

“The road will remain closed until the resurfacing work has been completed.

“I will be sending a letter out to residents with an update as I am sure we will start to receive enquiries as to why the work hasn’t been completed.”

Judith Hughes, ward councillor for Greenhead, highlighted the urgency of the the need for repairs more than a year ago after the road began ‘sinking’ down the middle.

Now resurfacing work has been aggravated by problems with a water main bursting.

In a previous email to ward councillors, Ms Hunt said: “Unfortunately we have encountered problems with the Yorkshire Water main which is causing us delay and disruption.

“The main has burst over 12 times in just 277m. I have made contact with Yorkshire Water without much success so far, but I am still strongly pursuing the issue of asking them to replace this section of main.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said: “We are aware of the issues at Thornhill Road and are working closely with Kirklees Council to resolve them.

“Since the bursts last week we have carried out tests and can confirm that the water main is in a good condition.

“Before that the last burst was around six years ago.”
