Opinion is split over a proposed £15 fee for some parking permits.

As reported in Wednesday’s Examiner, Kirklees Council is proposing to offer free permits for to up to 9,000 households where permits are in force.

But if households want a second permit, or change their car, they will need to pay £15 for a replacement.

The Examiner held a survey asking if the permit was a good idea and the results show 41% of people said it was if it keeps the streets clearer.

But 59% said no to the idea, questioning why they should pay to park on their own street.

Debate on social media was also split - people in neighbouring Calderdale were surprised how little Kirklees was charging compared to their borough, where permits are £25 each.

Resident Brian Van Bellen wrote: “Permits in Lindley were introduced because hospital staff and visitors did not use the car parks and still don’t - two car families are being discriminated against.”

Claire Doyle wrote: “If the wardens came round and actually fined the cars that don’t have them already then I wouldn’t mind.”

Ian Kilroy wrote: “Kirklees say “No one has a right to park outside their house” but isn’t selling someone a permit giving them the right to do so?”

Owen Lucas wrote: “I live on the way to the university. Before we had parking permits the road was a nightmare in term time, however now it is relatively clear.

“Having said that, I have yet to see anyone out and about checking to see if permits are displayed.”

A decision will be made by Cabinet on Tuesday.
