Chris Powell was left to rue the win that got away at Fulham after his Huddersfield Town side produced “almost the perfect away performance”.

The manager, whose team were denied a first three-point haul of the Championship campaign by a stoppage-time goal, said: “We were dogged when we had to be. But we also played some good football.

“You need to get that balance when you play away, especially in the Championship, when it’s so tight.”

Powell, who saw Nahki Wells net his second goal of the term midway through the second half, added: “In the first half, we made sure we were in the right areas at the right time.

“In the second half, we started to believe we could go forward as well as containing them.

It’s frustrating. I know we are undefeated in three games, but it feels like we lost.”

Powell made one change after the 1-1 midweek home draw with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Sean Scannell was back after a hamstring problem and took the place of Ishmael Miller in a 4-2-3-1 system.

Scannell and Harry Bunn played either side of Jacob Butterfield, with Dean Whitehead and Jonathan Hogg the anchor pair.

“We needed to be solid in middle of pitch so I thought it was the right way to go,” explained Powell.

“I wanted a solid start, then we could get into the game.

“We frustrated their crowd, which we knew could happen, and came to the fore in the second half.

“We deserved our goal, we created other chances, and it was all there for us.

“With five minutes go up, you are looking to see it out, but it wasn’t to be.”

Fulham fans called for the sacking of Kit Symons at the end of the game, and the manager responded: “I understand the frustration from the supporters, they can get restless, but I also know that from hard times you have to show some character to get better.

“Hopefully that’s the result that will get us going now this season. But our form needs to be a lot better.”
