Chris Powell is aiming to use a blank week to winning effect as he prepares his Huddersfield Town squad for Saturday’s visit of Queens Park Rangers.

While the Londoners were in Capital One Cup action – ex-Town keeper Alex Smithies was handed a debut in the 2-1 second-round defeat at home to Carlisle United – Powell’s side didn’t have a game after their first-round defeat at home to Notts County.

“I didn’t want to lose the cup-tie, but we have to move on,” said Powell, whose side have drawn their last three Championship games and are still seeking a first win of the campaign after five attempts in all competitions.

The Notts County result made us all take a good look at things, and I think the players have responded well.

“We’ve been able to do a few different things in training because of there being no midweek game, and after a really busy start to the season, it’s been a bit of a chance to draw breath. Now we’re looking forward to QPR.”

Former Town midfielder Oscar Gobern also featured for Rangers in the clash with Carlisle.
