The Giants intend to follow up the new deal for Aaron Murphy with more positive announcements.

The 25-year-old utility back has today secured a contract extension which will keep him at the John Smith’s Stadium until the end of the 2018 season.

The long-term deal has been handed to Murphy to reward his consistent performances following his arrival from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in 2011.

And with the former Leeds Academy youngster widely regarded as one of the most under-rated players in Super League, Giants managing director Richard Thewlis is pleased the club have been able to hold on to him for longer.

“Aaron is a superbly reliable Huddersfield Giant and a hugely important part of our squad,” said Thewlis.

“To have his qualities here for the long term will give all our supporters a huge boost.

“He is highly respected throughout the game as a top-quality professional.

“This announcement follows on from the captures of Craig Huby and Jamie Ellis and the elevation of a number of our younger players into the full-time Super league squad for 2015. The fans can expect more such moves as we look to maintain our predominantly homegrown squad.”

Murphy’s value to the Giants has grown very considerably this year.

He has impressed at full-back, wing and centre at various stages of the season, giving head coach Paul Anderson some big selection headaches over the course of the season.

Murphy is also noted for his toughness.

He played a key role in the Giants’ 24-22 triumph at Leeds Rhinos in early June, despite playing much of the game with a broken thumb which later required surgery. That came just a week after he suffered a sickening clash of heads with Wigan’s Joe Burgess in the home win over the Warriors, and was desperate to carry on!
